Research on Dog Teeth Wear in Dog Clutch Transmissions

Article of Honda R&D Technical Review Vol.25 No.1

Summary

In dog clutch transmissions, the excessive wear of dog teeth affects the functions of transmission and becomes a factor to obstruct smooth operation. Therefore, a study was conducted to clarify the wear mechanism of dog teeth by analyzing the operations in transmissions during dog clutch engagement.
In addition, a method of estimating the contact stress applied to the dog teeth was developed, and it was confirmed that contact stress is highly correlated with the degree of dog teeth wear.
Use of the developed method enabled accurate investigation in the early stage of designing on specifications which are related to dog teeth wear.
