Teardown Analysis for Piston Assembly Friction with Optimization Controls

Summary

This research involved creating a method for analyzing the contribution of the skirt and rings to the friction force of the piston assembly, and implementing such analysis. The contribution analysis was carried out by identifying the respective Stribeck curves for the skirt and the rings. The results showed that the skirt is in the fluid-lubricated region and the rings are in the mixed-lubricated region of the curve. The results also made clear that the friction force of the skirt is the dominant component under high-speed, low-load conditions, in particular.
