Measurement of Local Air/Fuel Ratio and Evaluation of Accuracy of Engine Simulation Using Micro-Cassegrain Sensor

Summary

The fuel consumption rate of gasoline engines can be decreased by reducing cyclic variation and variations in the combustion state between cylinders, but this necessitates high-precision combustion control. Control of the air-fuel ratio (A/F) in the cylinders, in particular the local A/F near the spark plugs, is an important factor in combustion control. A three-dimensional engine simulation model enabling prediction of the local A/F near the spark plugs was therefore constructed. A micro-Cassegrain sensor able to measure the local A/F near the spark plugs in a real engine was used to evaluate the accuracy of the prediction. The results indicated that the local A/F can be predicted within the range of cyclic variation.
