Development of New Honda 6-speed Automatic Transmission for MDX

Summary

A new Honda 6-speed automatic transmission (AT) for the MDX has been developed with the aims of enhancing fuel economy, raising efficiency, and achieving greater compactness. The unit was built on a parallel-shaft structure similar to the previous Honda AT, which has high torque transmission efficiency. The new AT incorporated an additional gear stage and the ability to handle higher input torque from the engine. Meanwhile, providing for a common gear train and placement of the forward-reverse shift mechanism on the input shaft were performed. As a result of these and other measures, the overall length of the new transmission becomes 18 mm shorter than the 2007 model 5-speed AT for the MDX. A multi-plate lock-up clutch (LC) structure with a separate chamber in the torque converter was also adopted so that LC capacity could be increased and the LC control area expanded. In combination with the new hydraulic control system, this new configuration achieves a 5% or greater increase in fuel economy over that of the 2007 model year MDX while realizing greater power and driving performance with enhanced direct feeling.
