Development of 2018 Gold Wing

Article of Honda R&D Technical Review Vol.30 No.2

Summary

The Gold Wing is a grand tourer type motorcycle of Honda, which was first released in 1975. In the development of the new Gold Wing, we endeavored to create the motorcycle with the most enjoyable maneuverability throughout all the models appeared in the chronicle of the Gold Wing by applying the latest technologies while inheriting their DNA of reliability and safety conscience. To achieve this goal, a light weight and highly dense packaging was set as the most crucial objective, and its packaging design was reviewed throughout the entire vehicle. For the power source, a light weight compact engine, which is water-cooled four-stroke horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine with 1,833 cm3 displacement, was developed. As its transmission, a dual clutch transmission, which has seven-speed and reverse gears with slow speed forward and backward moving functions, was applied first in the Gold Wing series. A double wishbone type suspension uniquely designed by Honda was developed for its suspension. Thanks to those advanced technologies, the downsizing was realized compared to the previous model by 40 kg in weight, 55 mm in vehicle length, 40 mm in vehicle width and 25 mm in vehicle height, and that made it possible to realize the motorcycle with the most enjoyable maneuverability throughout all the models appeared in the chronicle of the Gold Wing.
